TERRY CUMMINGS: FROM CHICAGO HARDWOOD TO A LIFE OF PURPOSE
Basketball. Faith. Resilience. Legacy.

Chicago has produced generations of basketball greatness, but the story of Terry Cummings reaches far beyond points, rebounds and championships.
His journey stretches from Chicago’s basketball courts to DePaul University, through an 18-year NBA career, and ultimately into ministry and community service. It is the story of an athlete whose physical power made him formidable on the court—but whose faith and sense of purpose became just as important to the man he became.
Chicago Made
Born in Chicago, Cummings developed into a standout at Carver High School before choosing to remain home and play for legendary DePaul coach Ray Meyer. Cummings later recalled that his relationship with Meyer went far beyond basketball: they talked about church, politics, economics and life.
At DePaul from 1979–82, the 6-foot-9 power forward established himself as one of the premier players in college basketball. He scored 1,398 points, collected 857 rebounds, became a two-time All-American and helped DePaul compile an extraordinary 79–6 record during his three seasons.
His junior season showed just how dominant he had become. Cummings averaged 22.3 points and 11.9 rebounds, helping DePaul finish 26–2 after a 21-game winning streak. He earned consensus First-Team All-American recognition in 1982.
Decades later, DePaul made his place in school history permanent. His jersey was retired in 2024, and he had previously been inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.
An NBA Star Is Born
The San Diego Clippers selected Cummings second overall in the 1982 NBA Draft. He wasted no time proving he belonged.
As a rookie, he averaged 23.7 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and captured the 1983 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
That wasn’t a brief flash of greatness.
Cummings developed into one of the NBA’s premier forwards, earning two NBA All-Star selections and All-NBA honors while building a career that lasted from 1982 through 2000.
He played for the San Diego Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks, San Antonio Spurs, Seattle SuperSonics, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks and Golden State Warriors.
By the end, the numbers told the story of remarkable longevity:
19,460 points.
8,630 rebounds.
1,255 steals.
18 NBA seasons.
His career averages were 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.
When the Game Tested Him
Great careers aren’t defined only by what happens when everything works.
Cummings suffered a torn ACL roughly a decade into his NBA career. At around 30 years old, an injury of that magnitude could have closed the door.
Instead, it became another chapter.
Cummings later described the injury through the perspective of his faith, saying that after years of basketball he had felt burned out and had prayed that he needed a break. He attacked rehabilitation and returned to basketball just over seven months later, although he said complete recovery took considerably longer.
That comeback reveals something statistics cannot fully measure.
Terry Cummings could endure.
The Calling Was Already There
Basketball may have made Cummings famous, but faith was not something he discovered after the applause stopped.
During his college years, Cummings seriously considered walking away from basketball for ministry. According to his recollection, Ray Meyer encouraged him to remain at DePaul, arguing that the platform basketball provided could eventually allow him to reach even more people. Cummings stayed.
Years later, the connection between those two worlds became unmistakable.
DePaul describes Cummings as a Pentecostal pastor in Atlanta, and Cummings has spoken about ministry, philanthropy and helping young people focus on a larger purpose in life.
That makes his story different from the traditional retired-athlete narrative.
The jersey mattered.
The All-Star appearances mattered.
The nearly 20,000 NBA points mattered.
But they weren’t the entire assignment.
The Legendary Terry Cummings
For Chicago, Terry Cummings represents something special: a hometown talent who stayed home for college, became one of DePaul’s greatest players, reached basketball’s highest professional level and carried his Chicago foundation with him.
For basketball history, he is an NBA Rookie of the Year, All-Star and nearly 20,000-point scorer.
For the next generation, however, his story offers something even more valuable.
Talent can create an opportunity.
Discipline can build a career.
Resilience can carry you through adversity.
But purpose determines what you do with everything you’ve been given.
Terry Cummings spent 18 seasons showing people what he could do with a basketball.
His larger legacy shows what can happen when a person realizes that the platform was never supposed to be only about himself.
SFSMag1 Pull Quote: “The game gave Terry Cummings a platform. Faith gave the platform a purpose.” 🏀🙏🏿
